Job 23:10

But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.—Job 23:10

Have you ever been in a place that you want change soo bad?  You just want the pain to go away and get some relief?

Oh man, have I!!!

Reading about Job and considering other  examples of the Bible like the firery furnace and the lions den - and knowing that they were delivered, not burned, did not even smell or look like they had been there.  That's my God.  He is with us!  He will deliver me in due time so I will praise Him and pay attention to his lead along the way.

Knowing refinement is coming to make me pure as gold.    Knowing I will be better for the trial.  Knowing my pain will serve others and will develop perseverance in me - is worth it all!!!!

Romans 8:38-39

Lord - Christmas is all about you.  Perfect love came down.   Please remind us of your purpose and presence.  We confess that our priorities get messed up sometimes.  And we look at material things more than eternal things.  Help us be givers and not just of gifts but of ourselves.  Open our eyes and hearts this season.

Isaiah 40 (1 of our favorites)

Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding? (Isaiah 40:1-14 NIV)

1 Corinthians 15 :58

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV)

Simply put - we are exhausted right now. A few of us are sick.  Weary.  There's a lot of demands on all of us - so we have to remember that we work unto our Lord and that it's not in vain - it will produce fruit!!

Strengthen us oh God this morning for the day ahead of us.   Fill us with your Spirit and then use us once again.

G - Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 NIV)

We wrestled with this in a real way this morning. Having a pile of "treasures" in our bedroom for "us"  - makes me feel sick. We are struggling with how to de-materialize this Christmas season.  The tradition is to give gifts so that means spend money and shop. Is this action "storing up treasures on earth"?

Storing up treasures in heaven means people/ souls !!! It means relationships are most important.  So we have resolved to - as we give and receive gifts to look into the eyes of those we give and receive from and see the soul.   To open our mouths and speak love and truth to those people and make a difference!!!
To pray for them out loud or in our hearts and ask God to give us his heart for others.

Where our treasure is - you will find our hearts.   Let it be in you alone!!!

Livia - Gal. 5:22

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness and self-control.Against such things there is no law.

We strive for perfection at Christmas time.  What would Jesus say to us if he showed up next to us at the shopping centers?

Exhibit love, joy and peace to everyone!!! Don't think it odd but rather treat each encounter with a person as a divine appointment to share love, joy and peace.

Hebrews 11 (the faith chapter)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)

Faith is our confidence and assurance in what we cannot see and what we hope for .  We have hope in this life because of our God and all he's done for us. We sang a song last night at church called "Hope was born this night " by sidewalk prophets and as I was singing it I was thinking about how my life was changed when Jesus was born.  I am loved and free because Jesus was born - son of God- my hope, my family's hope my friend's hope  - I live in expectation of what is to come through my savior.

Colossians 3:15

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. (Colossians 3:15 NIV)

We talked about what could potentially steal our peace this Christmas and then what we could do to counter that attack-

Liv - getting presents / give presents

Kadin - being greedy and making the gathering about the gifts / just choose to enjoy the time with friends and family

Tim - stress of spending $/ consider it a real chance to bless others and embrace spending quality time with others.

Devin - getting down about busyness with basketball and life  / choose to enjoy the time off and not worry.

Gina - hosting parties and desperate for down time / let go of high expectations and make some white space on the calendar over the break to just be still !!

Tim - Gal. 5:24

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:24 NIV)

Jesus said if any man will follow me he will deny himself!!! Go to the funeral of your own dependence.  Sacrifice the natural so that the supernatural can become alive in is.

We should always be at war with our flesh.  True understanding of being alive in Christ is knowing what it looks like to be selfish and self centered and running from that behavior.

Gina 1 John 4:8

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. (1 John 4:8-9 NIV)

Jesus came not to shame and condemn but rather to love and to save.  When we consider the purpose of celebrating Christmas we must stay away from any religious traditions lest our hearts get cold and calloused. Let's open our hearts to let the real meaning Christmas change us.

Genesis 41:40

New International Version
You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you."

"Most of us are sterner with others than we are in regard to ourselves.   We make excuses for things in ourselves while we condemn in others things to which we are not naturally inclined." - Oswald Chambers

We have to account to God how we rule our body.  I'm responsible to manifest the life of the Lord Jesus in me through the power of the Holy Spirit -   it does not magically happen.   We have government over the temple (our bodies) of the Holy Spirit.  Over our imaginations and our affections.  We must never give way to inordinate affections.

Rule it!  Own it!  Make it submit.
Romans 12:1 - offer your body a living sacrifice.....the temple of the Holy Spirit!!!

Livia - John 7:37

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. (John 7:37 NIV)

What does it mean to be thirsty in this scripture?

Livia said when we are thirsty in body - we feel a need.  We are dry and if you go long enough without water it could be a desperation , it could mean if you don't get water you would die.

So - how do we drink God?
We HAVE to seek him.  We have to find quiet time alone with God.  This life is so busy and we are always going - so when do you drink God?  Do you have daily time alone in His word, to pray , to be still, to worship....?

After you drink - he flows from you - so what if you don't drink?  What's flowing from you???  (Yikes!)

Thirsty?  Drink!!!

Tim - 1 Corinthians 2:4

"My speech and my preaching was not with inticing words of mans wisdom, but  demonstration of the Spirit and of power."

If you substitute your own power in for Gods power - it will never produce fruit or bring change.  It's only by God's Spirit does anything real or transforming take place.

Never rely on self , but rather see your reliance of the Holy Spirit. Once rooted in Him nothing can shake you.

Personal relationship with Jesus causes us to see his disapproval of this world and sanctifies us through as through.
